Gisaeng is referring to the Korean woman who were trained as a professional artist. They were talented in dancing, conversing and music. However, no matter how talented and famous they were, they could never escape the fact that they were and forever of the lower class, and they were not allowed to get married. Therefore, the gisaengs seldom experienced a tragic romance. However, they were considered to be the leader of the fashion trend. They spent a lot of money onto making themselves attractive, since their job was to attract the noble or rich men at that time.
Hwang jini was one of the most famous gisaeng during the Joseon Dynasty. She was famous of her exceptional beauty, intelligence and fashion. I honestly is not quite fond of Korean dramas because of the slow pace but I always watch the historical simply because I love the Korean fashion in the old times, especially the gisaengs had a more grand outlook with an unique way to style their hair.
